So, after months of talking about how I want to be back on the road, travelling and experiencing the world again instead of working in an office at home in Sydney – I’m now on Nusa Ceningan – a small island off Bali in Indonesia!
As I type, I’m sitting in a small bar on the edge of a cliff that’s about a 10m drop into the ocean (and by on the cliff, I mean I’m sitting literally less than a metre from the drop… and could be closer if I wanted!)
I have a large Bintang (Indonesian beer), and I’m watching the surf break against the point below me and the waves continue along the beach to the seaweed farms. I am a bit nervous that a large ocean spray will fly up and get all over my laptop – but I’ve been sitting here a while now, and no splash has been THAT big… So I think I’m safe!
About 6 months ago, I realised that being back in Australia and working a full time office job really wasn’t for me. Prior to this, I thought that 2.5 years of travelling, living and working overseas would be enough long term travel for me – I could get by on travelling with my annual leave, and enjoying the income I have to spend on enjoying those trips. After all, this is what most people do, right? They go on their 2 year European adventure – UK working visa, travelling here and there at the same time. Then they come home, get a job, buy a house, start a family… Be an adult.
I’d been back in Australia for just over a year when I went on a 2 week trip to the UK & Greece. I had a great time, catching up with friends in the UK and seeing Greece – a country I’d not been to before. But on the flight home, I kept thinking “Is that it? I was just getting warmed up!”
I went back to work, and struggled to get back into the swing of it. I should be happy, I live in a wonderful country, with a good career, decent salary awesome apartment.
Over the Christmas period, I did a lot of thinking and reading online – to see if it’s possible to work online from anywhere. To start with, it was all nonsense – spam and scams… Pay heaps of money and I’ll tell you how to get rich overnight! *I call bullshit*
**news break – I just got sprayed by a large wave! Luckily it just got me, and my laptop is still dry**
I then found blogs – travel blogs, online business blogs, digital nomad blogs, location independent blogs, freelancing blogs… They don’t necessarily tell you step by step how to do this – but they tell you IT’S POSSIBLE. People are doing this, and in countless different ways.
This is what I’m going to do – somehow!
While working full time, I did not have the time or energy to work out the what or how, to put together a detailed business plan or even an ‘elevator story’ to tell people what the deal is. That is what this trip is about.
I watched a TedTalk on YouTube this morning, and the speaker was talking about the amazing things that could be possible, however most people are too scared to start in case they “fail”. This really got me thinking about what I’ve started – so many people have asked “What if you run out of money?” and “Can you REALLY make a living online?” and “What are you actually going to do?”
All of these questions come back to the fact that I might “fail” … But wouldn’t the bigger failure be to not try to begin with? To not follow your dreams, not take risks and not live the experiences that could be possible?
I can answer the first question – if I do run out of money, and am not able to support myself overseas… I’ll head back to Australia for a while. This will not be failing – this will be making mistakes, learning, growing while also experiencing life. This will be coming home, to earn some money for a while before going back out into the big wide world with a bunch more experience and knowledge to give it another go.
I’m not sure what the future holds, but I’m excited to find out.
